In a recent tragic development, Burundi has witnessed the loss of nine lives in a ruthless rebel attack. The government spokesman, Jérôme Niyonzima, condemned the assault as a “cowardly attack” carried out by rebels armed with rifles in the western Bubanza province on Sunday night.
According to Niyonzima, among the victims were six women and a soldier, with five others sustaining injuries during the assault in Gihanga.
The rebel group responsible, known as RED-Tabara, claimed accountability for the attack. Their base is situated in South Kivu province, located in neighboring eastern Congo.
Eyewitnesses to the horrifying incident recounted scenes of terror, with government troops reportedly fleeing as heavily armed assailants pursued them, indiscriminately targeting civilians.
The sense of fear and vulnerability among residents is palpable, with many expressing concerns about the looming threat of further attacks.
RED-Tabara has previously claimed responsibility for similar acts of violence, including an attack on December 22 that resulted in the deaths of 10 security officials, as per their assertion. However, Burundi’s government disputes this claim, stating that the majority of the casualties were civilians, bringing the total death toll to 20.
Amidst these distressing events, accusations against Rwanda have resurfaced, with Burundian authorities alleging that RED-Tabara operates with the support and backing of the Rwandan government. Niyonzima reiterated the government’s stance, condemning Rwanda for allegedly providing training, arms, and shelter to the terrorist group.
Strained Relations Between Burundi and Rwanda
The escalating tensions have strained diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries, leading to Burundi’s decision to suspend diplomatic ties and close its border with Rwanda. President Évariste Ndayishimiye has directly accused Rwandan authorities of aiding RED-Tabara, further exacerbating the already fraught situation.
However, Rwandan officials have vehemently denied these allegations, maintaining their stance of non-involvement in the activities of RED-Tabara or any other rebel groups.
As the situation unfolds, the implications of these accusations and counter-accusations on regional stability and diplomatic relations remain uncertain. The need for dialogue, cooperation, and a concerted effort to address the root causes of conflict is more pressing than ever to prevent further loss of life and foster peace in the region.
