Real Madrid were crowned European champions after beating neighbours Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties on Saturday in Milan. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning penalty securing an unprecedented 11th Champions league trophy for Real Madrid.
The Champions League final went to penalty shootout after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time. Real Madrid were the first to score and take the lead in the 15th minute after Sergio Ramos bundled the ball home from a Gareth Bale flick-on header.
Atletico were given the opportunity to equalize in the 47th minute after being awarded a penalty. The penalty was awarded after Pepe clumsily kicked Torres from behind in the box. The opportunity was however wasted as Antoine Griezmann blasted his shot against the bar. New hope came after substitute Yannick Carrasco rifled in the equalizer in the 79th minute to send the game into extra time.
This defeat saw history repeating itself as Atletico Madrid has suffered defeats in their two previous final appearances including the most recent against Real Madrid in 2014.
This win also meant history for Zidane as he became the seventh person ever to win the European cup as both a player and a coach.
