Siphiwe Mkhonza, the former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender, sadly passed away on March 5, 2024 at the age of 44. His family confirmed his death, stating that he had been battling kidney infections for a long time.
Mkhonza was affectionately known as “Dr Mnandi” and had a successful football career, representing several clubs in the South African top flight.
Known for his remarkable career spanning several prestigious clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, Golden Arrows, and Bloemfontein Celtic, Mkhonza’s legacy leaves an indelible mark on South African football.

Mkhonza’s journey into the world of professional football commenced in 1999 when he was scouted by Bloemfontein Celtic. From there, he showcased his exceptional talent with stints at Ria Stars and Golden Arrows before donning the iconic jersey of Kaizer Chiefs in 2004. During his tenure with Amakhosi, Mkhonza not only secured a league title but also earned a call-up to the national team, Bafana Bafana, further solidifying his status as a defensive powerhouse.
Following his time at Chiefs, Mkhonza continued to grace the football pitch with his presence, representing SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, AmaZulu, and Black Leopards in the latter stages of his illustrious career.
Beyond his contributions on the field, Mkhonza transitioned seamlessly into a role as a TV analyst for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). His insightful commentary and deep understanding of the game endeared him to fans across the nation.
However, in recent times, Mkhonza had been battling illness, and sadly, he succumbed to complications related to a kidney infection. His family confirmed his passing in the early hours of a Tuesday morning, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support received during his illness.
Throughout his journey, Mkhonza was supported by his girlfriend and the mother of his three children, Ms. Nondumiso Masengemi, who cared for him diligently at their home in Roodepoort.
Siphiwe Mkhonza is survived by his children, his father Joseph ‘Skheshe Kheshe’ Mkhonza, and his mother Phindile Mkhonza.
