Bayern Munich look assured of a Champions League quarterfinal spot for a seventh straight season after thrashing 10-man Besiktas 5-0 in Germany.
The Turkish club had a one-man disadvantage from the 16th minute when last man Domagoj Vida brought down Robert Lewandowski and Bayern made their visitors pay with an emphatic round-of-16 first-leg victory.
Thomas Muller converted from close range in both halves, and Kingsley Coman also swept home.
Top-scorer Robert Lewandowski added two more for Bayern Munich as Besiktas tired.
“Everything is possible,” Mueller said when asked whether Bayern can repeat their 2013 haul of Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup titles.
However head coach Jupp Heynckes, 72, who oversaw the treble five years ago, insists Bayern must do better if they want all three titles again.
“Any talk like that is the job of journalists, the Champions League is a different competition and we must improve,” said Heynckes.
“Everyone in the stadium saw that we found it hard in the first half.
“We didn’t find our rhythm and we were nervous – I don’t know my team like that.
“In the first half there wasn’t any tempo to our game, our passing was off and it allowed Besiktas to attack us more.
“The opener before the break gave us a psychological advantage and in the second half we saw a different Bayern Munich team.
“We scored some great goals and played some good football.”
Besiktas, who won all three of their away games in qualifying from Group G, started brightly with Vagner Love shooting just over and Ricardo Quaresma forcing Bayern keeper Sven Ulreich to save at his near post.
Besides Besiktas good start, Jupp Heynckes’ men had 35 shots to their opponents’ six, and are well placed to reach the quarter-finals for a seventh year in a row when they travel to Istanbul for the second leg on 14 March.
