Bafana Bafana earned a 2-0 victory over Zambia at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday to win the inaugural Four Nations Tournament.
A goal by Mamelodi Sundowns striker Percy Tau in the 15th minute set Bafana Bafana on a path to victory. Lille forward Lebo Mothiba sealed the victory for Stuart Baxter’s man in the dying minutes of the game. Mothiba found the net just a minute after coming on as a substitute replacing Tau.
The tournament had four countries participating namely South Africa, Zambia, Angola and Zimbabwe. Zambia hosted the tournament.
Bafana Bafana made it to the final after beating Angola 6-5 on penalties on Wednesday. Zambia also got to the finals after defeating Zimbabwe on penalties.
In the match which was played earlier on for the third place play-off Angola defeated Zimbabwe 6-4 on penalties (4-2 in the penalty shootout). This was after the match finished 2-2 in regulation time.
Stuart Baxter praised his men for the character they showed against a tough Zambian side. He said he knew the first 20 minutes were going to be important against the Chipolopolo who were on the front foot. Baxter said his teams plan was to make sure they would not concede early.
The South African coach was also full of praise for the Zambian coach Wedson Nyirenda for assembling a formidable side.
Bafana is now set to face Libya later on this year in September for the 2019 CAF African Cup of Nations Qualifier.
