Arsenal suffered another dose of humiliation as Manchester City cruised to a comfortable 3-0 Premier League win at the Emirates.
The Gunners were looking to exert revenge after the Caraboa Cup final defeat to the Citizens on Sunday, and as expected Arsene Wenger altered the playing personnel.
However, goals from Bernardo Silva, David Silva and Leroy Sane ensured the City cruised to a comfortable victory. The Citizens put on a devastating display which saw them go for the break already leading 3-0.
This defeat was a fourth defeat in five matches for Arsenal, who played out this latest flop in a sparsely-populated Emirates Stadium – with many fans unable to make it because of the bad weather.
City’s 3,000 travelling fans, meanwhile, braved the snow to enjoy outstanding performance by their team. The win means City need just five more wins to clinch the Premier League title.
Arsenal’s record in all competitions in 2018 now reads P13 W4 D2 L7. Sunday’s trip to the seaside to face Brighton now looks like it could be sink or swim for Wenger.
To be fair to Arsenal, they did at least offer more attacking threat than they had in the 3-0 Caribao Cup Final defeat at Wembley on Sunday. They were unfortunate to see Pierre Emerick-Aubamayeng miss a penalty in the 58th minute. Who knows what could have happened if he had scored.
Former Arsenal player Martin Keown questioned whether things had ever been this bad for the club.
Commentating for BBC radio, he said: “It’s been a sad evening for Arsene Wenger and I don’t think I’ve seen it this bad for Arsenal since maybe Terry Neill left in the 1980s.
“Is it a defining night for Arsene Wenger? Last season they went out of the Champions League versus Bayern Munich, it was 10-0 over the two ties. The owner has supported Arsene Wenger but it gets ever closer to a change being made.
“I’m not looking forward to the Brighton game. If they lose that as well it really tests the club.”
The result leaves Arsenal in sixth place and 10 points off the Champions League spots.
Arsenal have now lost seven times in 12 games this year.
